Well Child Exam Q & A

What is a well-child exam?

A well-child exam with Dr. Rodriguez includes a medical evaluation and treatment, if necessary, for babies, children, and teenagers. These visits often occur once a year to ensure your child grows and develops at a healthy pace and thrives physically, emotionally, and mentally. Dr. Rodriguez specializes in pediatric medicine in addition to primary care.

What are the benefits of well-child exams?

The benefits of well-child exams include peace of mind and the chance to detect physical and mental health concerns before they cause problems with your child’s growth and development. Well-child exams provide the opportunity to address questions you may have about your child or parenting.

What happens during well-child exams?

During well-child exams with Dr. Rodriguez, she weighs your child, measures their height and head circumference (in babies), and evaluates their body mass index (BMI). She also checks their pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs.

Dr. Rodriguez evaluates your child’s growth, development, and overall health during a physical exam. She asks about their eating habits, sleep, physical abilities, symptoms, medical history, and medications. She provides vision and hearing screenings when necessary and offers onsite labs and imaging procedures.

Dr. Rodriguez also offers screenings to check for depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other mental health challenges.

If your child needs treatment for a medical concern, such as prescription medications or a minor in-office procedure, Dr. Rodriguez can help. She also provides vaccinations that reduce their chance of contracting communicable illnesses and diseases.

How often should I schedule a well-child exam?

Schedule a well-child exam once yearly for kids and teenagers aged 3 and older. Dr. Rodriguez also offers care for newborns right after birth, at 3-5 days old, and at one month, two months, four months, and six months of age. Schedule well-child exams at nine months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months of age, and when your child turns 3.

Dr. Rodriguez also offers sick visits, same-day appointments, telemedicine appointments, and house calls when necessary. She’s available anytime you need her to address urgent medical needs or answer questions that arise. Health care membership plans are also available, and many health insurance plans are accepted at the practice.
